Bridge
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina, opened in 2005 as a modern replacement for the aging Grace Memorial and Silas N. Pearman Bridges, which had become structurally unsound and too low for modern shipping needs.
Named after Arthur Ravenel Jr., a former U.S. Congressman and state senator who championed the funding and construction of the bridge, it spans over two and a half miles across the Cooper River, connecting downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. The bridge features a striking cable-stayed design with two diamond-shaped towers rising 575 feet and a deck 186 feet above the river, designed to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes.
It has eight lanes that accommodate up to 100,000 vehicles daily and includes a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle path called Wonders’ Way. The bridge has become a beloved icon of Charleston’s skyline and an important transportation link supporting the region’s growth and modern shipping requirements.
Its construction cost was about $700 million, and it replaced the older bridges, whose materials were repurposed as artificial reefs. The bridge enjoys widespread local support for its safety, design, and contribution to the area's connectivity and development.
