Historical Landmark
Old Sheldon Church Ruins, located in Beaufort County, South Carolina, is the remnant of Prince William's Parish Church built between 1745 and 1753.
It is a striking example of early American architecture, modeled after a Greek temple with thick colonnaded walls and elegant details including a portico with a triangular pediment and Palladian windows. The church played a significant role during the Revolutionary War as a political and military center, providing a site for Continental troops to drill and hiding arms in the Bull family vault.
It was burned in 1779 by British troops but was rebuilt in 1826. Traditionally, it was believed that the church was again destroyed by Union troops under General Sherman in 1865 during the Civil War. However, recent research suggests that freedmen dismantled the interior to salvage materials to rebuild local homes, and the church was never rebuilt afterward.
The ruins, surrounded by moss-draped oaks and historic graves, continue to attract visitors with their serene beauty and historical significance, preserving a poignant chapter of South Carolina’s colonial and wartime past.
