Museum

Hampton Plantation State Historic Site in McClellanville, South Carolina, preserves a 300-acre colonial-era rice plantation established in 1735 along Wambaw Creek, a tributary of the South Santee River, with its Georgian-style mansion—one of the finest wood-frame examples featuring an early temple-front portico—expanded by the Horry and Rutledge families using enslaved African labor to cultivate "Carolina Gold" rice.

A National Historic Landmark since 1970, donated by poet laureate Archibald Rutledge in 1970, it interprets Lowcountry rice culture, slavery through Civil War emancipation, and post-war freedpeople's lives via guided mansion tours (Friday-Tuesday), walking trails past rice field remnants, a historic African American cemetery, the 220-year-old Washington Oak spared at George Washington's 1791 request, magnolia gardens, and wildlife viewing.
