Mars Bluff Atomic Bomb Impact Crater, South Carolina, United States

Crater

Mars Bluff Atomic Bomb Impact Crater in South Carolina marks the site where, on March 11, 1958, a U.S. Air Force B-47 accidentally dropped an unarmed atomic bomb on the backyard of the Gregg family during a training flight.

While the bomb's nuclear core was not installed, its conventional explosives detonated on impact, instantly creating a crater about 70 to 75 feet wide and up to 35 feet deep just yards from the Gregg home. The violent blast injured six family members, destroyed several buildings, uprooted trees, and scattered debris over the property, but miraculously caused no deaths.

Had the bomb been fully armed, the nearby city of Florence might have suffered catastrophic destruction. Today the crater sits on private, wooded land and remains a little-known, difficult-to-access site, with fragments of the bomb displayed at the Florence County Museum.
