Bates State Park is a 131-acre park in Grant County, Oregon, USA, near Prairie City along the Middle Fork John Day River, Bridge Creek, and Clear Creek, built on the site of a former lumber mill and company town that operated from 1917 until 1975.
Opened in 2011 after advocacy by former residents, it features Bates Pond fed by Bridge Creek with a fish ladder for steelhead and salmon, 28 primitive first-come, first-served campsites for tents and RVs open May to October, vault toilets, potable water, and a hiker/biker area on the TransAmerica bicycle trail.
Visitors enjoy over three miles of easy hiking trails through meadows and forests with interpretive panels on local history, picnicking, fishing, and valley views from overlooks, offering a quiet base for exploring the Blue Mountains.
