Formed millions of years ago as an igneous rock intrusion separate from the main Black Hills, the park offers a 1.8-mile summit trail with panoramic views across four states, plus Bear Butte Lake for fishing, boating, horseback riding, and primitive camping at two sites, picnic shelters, an education center, and bison roaming nearby.
Visitors are asked to respect worshippers by staying on trails, leaving artifacts undisturbed, and noting no dogs or horses on the butte itself.
