Park
Bentsen‑Rio Grande Valley State Park is a roughly 764‑acre Texas state park located just south of the city of Mission in Hidalgo County, near the Rio Grande along the U.S.–Mexico border in South Texas. The park protects a remnant of the Rio Grande floodplain forest and thorny scrub vegetation, forming a subtropical oasis that is incredibly rich in birds and butterflies, with more than 325 bird species and about 250 butterfly species recorded, several of which are found nowhere else in the United States. It serves as the headquarters for the World Birding Center, a network of nine birding sites along the Lower Rio Grande, and is especially famous for spring and fall raptor migrations viewed from the Hawk Observation Tower. The park is car‑free, so visitors explore on foot, bike, or via a tram tour, using about 7 miles of trails and a paved 3.5‑mile road, plus a wheelchair‑accessible Rio Grande Trail, to see wildlife, a small exhibit hall, and primitive campsites shaded by trees in this quiet, biodiverse valley sanctuary.
