Bill Burton Fishing Piers State Park

Bill Burton Fishing Piers State Park, Maryland, United States

Park

Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park is a roughly 24‑ to 25‑acre Maryland state park that straddles the Choptank River at the former Choptank River Bridge near Trappe, with land and piers in both Dorchester and Talbot counties.

The park was created in 1987 when the old Emerson C. Harrington Bridge was converted into a fishing pier after being replaced by the new Frederick C. Malkus Bridge, and in 2009 it was renamed to honor Bill Burton, a longtime outdoors writer and fishing advocate who helped save the bridge for recreational use.

The site includes a long pier section on the Talbot County side, a shorter pier in Dorchester County, walking trails along the river, shoreline picnic areas, and popular fishing for species such as perch, striped bass, croakers, and catfish, although structural issues have led to the fishing piers being closed until further notice while shoreline access and trails on the Talbot side remain open for visitors.
