Park
Bladon Springs State Park is a 357-acre recreation area in Choctaw County, Alabama, near the town of Bladon Springs, renowned for its four historic mineral springs rich in sulfur, iron, magnesium, and calcium that were believed to have healing properties.
Opened as a private spa in 1838 by James Conner, it became a popular 19th-century resort dubbed the "Saratoga of the South" after a grand Greek Revival hotel accommodating 200 guests was built in 1846, complete with a ballroom, bowling alley, billiard room, skating rink, bath houses, and croquet grounds; it operated through the Civil War but declined afterward, with the state acquiring the site in 1934 and opening the park in 1939 after the hotel burned in 1938.
Today, managed jointly by Alabama State Parks and Choctaw County, it offers modern and primitive campsites, picnic shelters with grills and tables, playgrounds, and day-use areas centered around the preserved springs, providing a peaceful spot for history exploration and outdoor relaxation amid natural surroundings.
