Bogue Chitto State Park spans 1,786 acres in Washington Parish, Louisiana, south of Franklinton along the scenic Bogue Chitto River, named from Choctaw for "big creek" and opened in 2010 amid diverse habitats of cypress-tupelo swamps, hardwood forests, small streams, and rolling uplands.
Visitors enjoy tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and seasonal rentals on the slow-moving river with pebble beaches and canyons, fishing in 11 stocked lakes, a water playground, swimming at your own risk, and a unique gorge called Fricke's Cave featuring delicate two-foot sandstone spires viewable from boardwalks.
The park offers 81 RV sites, four cabins, group camping, picnic pavilions, a lodge with conference room, 7 miles of nature trails including mountain biking loops, 14 miles of equestrian trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, and ample wildlife viewing, attracting over 116,000 visitors yearly.
