Park
Bolon Island Tideways State Wayside, also known as Bolon Island Tideways State Scenic Corridor, is an 11.4-acre day-use park on Bolon Island in Douglas County, Oregon, USA, located 10 river miles from the Umpqua River mouth, north of Reedsport along Highway 101 just past the Umpqua River Bridge.
Gifted to the state in 1934 by William C. and Jennie D. Chamberlain in memory of their children, it features a half-island hiking trail offering views of the Umpqua River shoreline, a major double-crested cormorant rookery since 1988 with hundreds of nests in stick platforms amid nitrogen-killed "ghost forest" trees, and a historic marker for explorer Jedediah Smith's 1828 overland route where his party faced a massacre.
Once a Native American site and early settler namesake, this quiet, uncrowded spot lacks restrooms, water, or fees, providing pet-friendly trails for birdwatching, scenic tideway views, and peaceful nature amid Oregon's coastal lowlands.
