Park and Garden
Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey, established in 1895, is the nation's first county park and one of the largest urban parks in the United States, spanning 360 acres with a combination of woodlands, meadows, and a large lake formed from the former Old Blue Jay Swamp.
Designed initially by John Bogart and Nathan Barrett and later refined by the Olmsted Brothers, the park features a unique blend of gardenesque elements, naturalistic landscapes, numerous bridges, gazebos, and arbors alongside geometrically patterned gardens. It is renowned for its extensive collection of more than 4,000 cherry blossom trees planted in 1927, which draw large crowds each spring for the celebrated Cherry Blossom Festival.
Originally used as a Civil War training ground, the area has transformed through generous land donations from prominent Newark families and public funding into a vibrant space for public recreation and events, symbolizing a historic and cultural treasure in Newark’s urban fabric.
