Museum
Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury, New Hampshire, is a historic site and museum that preserves one of the most complete Shaker communities in America.
Established in 1792 by Shaker converts led by Benjamin Whitcher, the village became home to a self-sufficient religious community known for simplicity, equality, celibacy, and craftsmanship. At its height in the mid-19th century, Canterbury housed about 300 residents across more than 100 buildings on 3,000 acres, supporting itself through farming, livestock breeding, herbal medicine, and finely crafted goods.
The Shakers’ Meeting House and Dwelling House, built in 1792 and 1793, remain among the site’s original and best-preserved structures. When the last Shaker sister, Ethel Hudson, died in 1992, the community transitioned fully into a museum dedicated to preserving Shaker traditions.
Today, the 694-acre site includes 25 original and 4 reconstructed buildings open to visitors, offering guided tours, exhibits, and interpretive programs that explore the Shakers’ faith, innovation, and communal way of life. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Canterbury Shaker Village continues to inspire visitors with its emphasis on craftsmanship, spiritual devotion, and harmony with nature.
