State Government Office
The New Hampshire State House, located in Concord, serves as the seat of the state’s government and is one of the oldest state capitols in the United States still housing its original legislative chambers.
Designed by architect Stuart Park and built between 1816 and 1819 using granite from nearby Rattlesnake Hill, the building exemplifies Greek Revival and Federalist architectural styles with its granite façade, Doric columns, and a gold-domed cupola topped by a gilded eagle.
The State House was constructed to host the General Court, the Governor and Council, and various state offices, all funded by the City of Concord at a cost of around $82,000. Expanded several times, notably in 1866 and 1910, it has preserved historic spaces like Doric Hall—now called the Hall of Flags—which displays battle flags from New Hampshire regiments dating back to the Civil War.
The building’s dome, first gilded in the early 19th century and most recently regilded in 2016, remains a symbol of the state’s civic pride. Open to the public, the State House embodies both the working heart of New Hampshire’s government and a monument to its storied granite craftsmanship and democratic heritage.
