Park
Cape Arago State Park is a rugged coastal park on the southern Oregon coast, about 15 miles southwest of Coos Bay at the end of Cape Arago Highway.
It sits on a rocky headland that juts into the Pacific Ocean and offers dramatic ocean views, high cliffs, and several small coves backed by steep slopes. Visitors use the park mainly for short walks from the parking area out to cliff‑top viewpoints, where they can watch waves break on offshore reefs, see seals and sea lions on Shell Island and Simpson Reef, and scan the horizon for migrating whales and passing boats.
Two short trails lead down to the south and north coves, with the south cove reaching a sandy beach and tide pools rich in intertidal life, while the northern cove gives access to fishing and beachcombing but is closed each spring to protect seal pups. The park is day‑use only, with picnic tables, restrooms, and a shelter, and it fits into a larger coastal loop that includes nearby state parks such as Sunset Bay and Shore Acres.
