Park
Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway is a 15,314‑acre Texas state park located in the Texas Panhandle just north of the small town of Quitaque in Briscoe County, where the rolling plains of the Llano Estacado abruptly drop into dramatic red‑rock canyons carved by wind and water over millions of years.
The park is home to the Official Texas State Bison Herd, with about 300 bison that roam the prairie and sometimes wander near trails and campsites, giving visitors a Yellowstone‑style wildlife experience in West Texas.
It offers roughly 90 miles of hiking and biking trails ranging from easy mesa walks to steep, challenging overlook routes, plus a 64‑mile Caprock Canyons Trailway that follows an old railroad right‑of‑way for hiking, biking, and horseback riding across Floyd, Briscoe, and Hall counties, including a 528‑foot Clarity Tunnel.
The park also has a small lake, Lake Theo, for fishing and non‑motorized boating, along with drive‑up and primitive campsites, picnic areas, and a visitor center, making it a remote but rewarding stop for canyon scenery, history, and wildlife in the high plains.
