Historical Place Museum
Castle in the Clouds, also known as the Lucknow Estate, is a stunning 16-room mansion built between 1913 and 1914 by wealthy shoe manufacturer Thomas Gustave Plant for his wife Olive Cornelia Dewey.
Located atop Lee Mountain in Moultonborough, New Hampshire, the estate spans over 6,300 acres and offers breathtaking views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains. The Craftsman-style mansion was designed by architect J. Williams Beal and featured cutting-edge technology for its time, including a house-wide electrical system, an early version of central vacuum, and innovative showers known as needle showers.
The property includes a carriage house, gift shop, art gallery, and extensive walking trails. Now operated by the Castle Preservation Society as a museum, it provides visitors with a glimpse into early 20th-century luxury living, regional history, and scenic natural beauty.
The estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2024.
