Catholic Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Charleston, South Carolina, is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston and an architectural landmark completed in 1907 after the previous cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1861.
Designed by Brooklyn architect Patrick Keely, the cathedral was built in a grand Gothic Revival style featuring pointed arches, a magnificent rose window, and elaborate stained glass depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Baptism by John the Baptist. Despite financial challenges that delayed some planned features, including an originally intended spire which was only added more than a century later in 2010, the cathedral remains an iconic spiritual and cultural center in Charleston.
The interior showcases intricate plasterwork, Flemish oak pews, and historical religious symbolism, contributing to its reputation as a masterpiece of ecclesiastical art. Over the years, it has undergone extensive renovations to preserve its historic beauty, continuing to serve as a place of worship, community gatherings, and a testament to the city's rich religious heritage.
