Park
Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area spans about 3,800 acres in northwestern Chippewa County, Wisconsin, as part of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve, showcasing exceptional glacial landforms like over 70 kettle lakes, hummocks, eskers, kames, and ice-walled lake plains amid forests of oak, maple, birch, pine, and open prairies. The park features over 23 miles of foot-only trails including a key segment of the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail, with popular self-guided loops from the David R. Obey Ice Age Interpretive Center that highlight geology, wildlife, and history through exhibits open Wednesday to Sunday. Activities include hiking, snowshoeing, birdwatching, fishing, canoeing on lakes like Plummer and Shattuck, and primitive backpack camping at three outpost sites, with no motorized vehicles, bikes, or horses permitted to preserve its pristine nature.
