Wildlife Refuge
Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge in Florida is a protected area created in 1983 specifically to safeguard the threatened Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee.
It encompasses about 177 acres around Kings Bay, including 20 islands, spring habitats like the important Three Sisters Springs, and the last undeveloped springs in the area. The refuge offers critical winter habitat for over 600 manatees, who migrate to the warm 72°F spring waters for survival during the colder months.
To protect the manatees, parts of the refuge and several warm-water sanctuaries are closed to the public from November through March, with occasional temporary closures during extreme cold. The refuge also supports migratory and shore birds with island habitats and partners with wildlife agencies for manatee rescues and ongoing research, including health assessments and population counts.
Visitors can explore the area via boat or kayak, and land access to Three Sisters Springs is managed with controlled entry to balance protection and public education. Besides manatees, the refuge's islands provide habitat for birds such as bald eagles and osprey, making it a vital conservation area and an important place for wildlife recreation and learning.
