State Park
Deception Pass State Park, spanning the north tip of Whidbey Island and the south edge of Fidalgo Island in Washington, was established in 1923 on former military reservation land originally set aside in 1866.
It is known for its dramatic cliffs, old growth forests, rugged coastline, and the iconic Deception Pass Bridge built in 1935, which links the two islands. The park features over 4,000 acres, 14.6 miles of saltwater shoreline, three lakes, and 35 miles of trails. The area’s rock quarry history, including work by incarcerated men in the early 20th century, added to its unique story before becoming a public park.
During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps improved the park by constructing roads, trails, picnic shelters, and bathhouses that visitors still use today. The park offers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and recreational activities like hiking, boating, and camping, making it Washington’s most beloved state park.
