Fortress
Fort Pickens is a historic pentagonal military fort located on Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola, Florida, built between 1829 and 1834 as part of the U.S.
Third System of coastal fortifications to defend Pensacola Bay and its Navy Yard. Named after Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens, it was the largest brick fort on the Gulf Coast and designed to mount over 200 cannons to protect the bay's entrance.
The fort played a significant role during the Civil War, remaining in Union hands throughout the conflict, unlike most Southern forts, and withstood attacks as Union forces defended it against Confederate attempts to capture it. Constructed largely by enslaved African American laborers, the fort also later became a symbol of emancipation during the war. Fort Pickens served in various military capacities until it was decommissioned in 1947.
Today, it is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, managed by the National Park Service, and offers visitors a chance to explore its well-preserved walls, historical exhibits, and scenic surroundings on Pensacola Beach. The site stands as both a monument of coastal defense and a reminder of complex American history involving warfare, resilience, and freedom.
