Park
Franklin Mountains State Park is a roughly 24,000‑acre Texas state park located entirely within the city limits of El Paso, along the 23‑mile Franklin Mountains range that runs from El Paso into southern New Mexico.
Towering above the city at up to 7,192 feet on North Franklin Mountain, the park is one of the largest urban wilderness parks in the United States, with about 27,000 acres and more than 100 miles of multi‑use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The rugged Chihuahuan Desert terrain features ancient Precambrian rocks, dramatic ridgelines, and desert vegetation, plus wildlife such as desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyotes, and a wide variety of birds.
The park offers limited camping and picnic areas, rock climbing routes, and scenic viewpoints, making it a quick yet wild escape for city residents and visitors to the border region.
