Garden
Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States, spanning seven acres overlooking Narragansett Bay.
The estate was purchased in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton as a summer retreat, featuring a Victorian house surrounded by formal gardens and farmland. Beginning around 1912, gardener Joseph Carreiro started shaping fast-growing shrubs like California privet into a variety of sculpted animals, including giant teddy bears, a giraffe, an elephant, and more, using traditional hand-pruning techniques that took decades to perfect.
After Brayton's death, his daughter Alice renamed the estate "Green Animals" in honor of the unique topiary work, assisted by George Mendonça, who expanded the garden's collection. The garden also includes vegetable and herb plots, a fruit orchard, and over 35 formal flowerbeds with geometric pathways and arbors.
The property has survived hurricanes and continues to be maintained by the Preservation Society of Newport County, attracting visitors with its living sculptures, historic charm, and colorful seasonal blooms.
