American Restaurant
The White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island, is America's oldest operating restaurant, established in 1673 in a building originally constructed as a private residence in 1652.
It was converted into a tavern by William Mayes Sr., and officially licensed as such in 1687. The tavern has a colorful history, including ownership by William Mayes Jr., a notorious pirate who sailed with Captain Kidd and later became tavern keeper. Over the years, the tavern served many roles including hosting Rhode Island's General Assembly, Criminal Court, and town meetings.
It was occupied by British mercenaries during the Revolutionary War and survived multiple expansions and restorations. After falling into disrepair in the mid-20th century, it was saved and restored by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Today, it remains a popular historic restaurant known for its colonial charm, 17th-century architecture, and classic New England cuisine, while also being recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
