Historical Place Museum
Rosecliff is a grand Gilded Age mansion located in Newport, Rhode Island, built between 1898 and 1902 for Theresa Fair Oelrichs, a silver heiress, and her husband Hermann Oelrichs.
Designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White with principal architect Stanford White, the mansion is modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles but adapted to an "H" shape with a glazed arcade of arched windows and Ionic pilasters. The 40-room estate features a 40 by 80-foot ballroom, the largest in Newport, surrounded by formal gardens and terraces overlooking the ocean. Rosecliff was renowned for its lavish social events hosted by Mrs. Oelrichs, including elaborate balls and dinners that made it a center of Newport society.
After passing through various owners, the mansion and its furnishings were donated to the Newport Preservation Society in 1971. Today, Rosecliff operates as a historic house museum, showcasing its magnificent architecture, opulent interiors, and storied history, allowing visitors to experience the splendor of America's Gilded Age.
