State Park
Hawks Nest State Park in West Virginia covers about 270 acres and is known for its stunning clifftop views of the New River Gorge, which lies roughly 750 feet below.
The park has a rich history that dates back to Native American use as a trail and osprey nesting ground, and later became significant for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway constructed through the gorge in the late 1800s. In 1934, the Hawks Nest Dam was completed to create the lake that is now central to the park, and the state purchased the land in 1935.
The Civilian Conservation Corps helped develop the park’s initial infrastructure in the 1930s, building stone shelters, trails, and a museum. The park features a 31-room lodge designed by the firm of Walter Gropius, an aerial tramway for views down to the river, hiking trails of varying difficulty, picnic areas, and seasonal jet boat rides on the river. It has also been connected to significant historic events, including the Hawks Nest Tunnel disaster during the Great Depression.
With its combination of natural beauty, outdoor adventure opportunities like whitewater rafting, and rich history, the park attracts visitors from across the country. The lake, trails, and overlooks provide a peaceful counterpoint to the thrilling experiences nearby, making Hawks Nest a diverse destination for recreation and relaxation.
