Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site, a National Historic Landmark in John Day, Oregon, preserves a modest 1865 wooden building—originally a trading post and stage stop along the Dalles-Canyon City wagon road—that became the lifelong home and business of Chinese immigrants Ing "Doc" Hay and Lung On starting in 1887 or 1888, serving as a general store, herbal apothecary, post office, library, temple, social hub, and dormitory for the local Chinese community amid gold rush mining and anti-Chinese discrimination.
Doc Hay treated thousands with traditional Chinese medicine using over 500 herbs still lining shelves, while Lung On managed commerce and community affairs until the 1940s, when fading health closed operations in 1948, leaving the time capsule intact with artifacts, documents, and letters offering rare insights into Chinese-American life in rural Oregon donated to the city in 1955 and opened as a museum in 1975 after restoration.
Now managed by Oregon State Parks with guided tours May through October from an ADA-accessible interpretive center across the street detailing their legacy, the site commemorates resilience and cultural integration in eastern Oregon's history.
