Maquoketa Caves State Park in Iowa stands out for its network of more than a dozen caves, making it the state park with the most caves in Iowa. The park covers rolling woodland and rugged bluffs, with massive limestone formations and scenic hiking trails weaving through the landscape.
Among its best-known caves is Dancehall Cave, large enough for visitors to walk upright through much of it, and named for the dances once held inside. The caves, arches, and natural bridges are formed from Silurian-age dolomite, dating back about 430 million years, and contain fossils of ancient marine life.
Besides being a hotspot for hikers and amateur spelunkers, the park is rich in both geological and cultural history, including evidence of use by Native Americans for thousands of years. Today, Maquoketa Caves State Park features an extensive trail system, an interpretive center with displays on geology and local history, picnicking and camping facilities, and remains a favorite year-round destination for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and families alike.
