Park

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park is a 705-acre park straddling Jasper and Tyler counties in East Texas, located along U.S. Highway 190 and Park Road 48 south of Jasper on the shores of B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir where the Angelina and Neches rivers converge.

Originally leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1964 and opened as Dam B State Park before renaming in 1965 to honor State Senator Martin Dies Jr., it comprises three units—Hen House Ridge, Walnut Ridge for camping, and day-use Cherokee—with deep Pineywoods forests, sloughs, and diverse habitats on the Big Thicket's edge.

Activities abound including paddling on 14 miles of trails like Walnut Slough and Neches River routes, fishing, swimming, hiking and biking over seven miles of paths, birdwatching, stargazing under dark skies, volleyball, and camping in screened shelters or cabins amid alligators, woodpeckers, and abundant wildlife.
