Historical Landmark
McLeod Plantation Historic Site, located on James Island near Charleston, South Carolina, is a preserved 37-acre site that offers a deep and meaningful look into the complex history of the Lowcountry, particularly its African American Gullah/Geechee heritage.
Established around 1851, the plantation was built on sea island cotton production and relied heavily on enslaved labor. The site includes the McLeod family home, several surviving slave cabins, and various outbuildings, reflecting life in the antebellum South and beyond.
During the Civil War, it served as a hospital and was later the site of the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, African American soldiers who helped emancipate enslaved people. After the war, the Freedmen’s Bureau used the property to assist newly freed people.
Now open to the public, McLeod Plantation educates visitors about the harsh realities of slavery, the resilience of enslaved and free African Americans, and the cultural legacy that continues to shape the region. The grounds feature an ancient oak tree over 600 years old and emphasize the ongoing story of freedom, equality, and cultural preservation within the Lowcountry.
