Historical Landmark
Middleton Place is a historic plantation located along the Ashley River near Charleston, South Carolina.
Established in the 1730s and expanded by Henry Middleton, a prominent colonial figure and President of the First Continental Congress, it served as the family home for generations, including Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The plantation is celebrated for having the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States, which were begun in the 18th century and are known for their camellias and azaleas. The main house and several buildings were largely destroyed by Union forces during the Civil War and later by the 1886 Charleston earthquake, but the surviving south flanker was used as a residence.
In the 20th century, John Julius Pringle Smith, a descendant, led efforts to restore the gardens and buildings. Today, Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark and museum offering insight into the lives of the Middleton family, colonial plantation life, and the significant cultural heritage of the American South.
