Park
Mother Neff State Park covers 259 acres along the Leon River in Coryell County, Texas, west of Moody and about 20 miles south of Waco, established as Texas's first state park in 1936 after Isabella Neff (mother of former Governor Pat M. Neff) donated the original 16 acres in 1916. Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s with stone structures like a rock tower, table, and water tower amid limestone canyons, bottomland forests, and Washita Prairie, it features short hiking trails such as Cave Trail to a rock shelter, Tower Trail for panoramic views, and a self-guided tree trail with bird blind and pond. Visitors enjoy camping in renovated sites above the floodplain, picnicking, geocaching, wildlife observation, wildflowers, and exploring Native American history from archaeological digs, though swimming and fishing are currently restricted due to river conditions.
