City Park
New Orleans City Park in Louisiana, established in 1854 on land donated by John McDonogh, is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, covering 1,300 acres of green space that spans about a mile wide and three miles long.
Originally part of the Allard Plantation and shaped by Native American and early French colonial histories, the park is renowned for its vast collection of ancient live oak trees, some over 800 years old. The park saw major development during the 1930s through the Works Progress Administration, which helped build key infrastructure such as bridges, roads, fountains, Tad Gormley Stadium, and the classical-style Peristyle pavilion, as well as planting the New Orleans Botanical Garden.
Over the decades, it has expanded to include attractions like the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, Storyland with whimsical playground characters, tennis courts, and golf courses, offering recreational and cultural activities to the community.
Despite suffering extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the park has been restored by strong community support and federal assistance, continuing to serve as a vital hub of nature, art, and family fun in the heart of New Orleans.
