History Museum

The Palace of the Governors at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe is the oldest continuously used public building constructed by Europeans in the continental United States, built starting in 1610 by Spanish governor Pedro de Peralta as the seat of colonial government on the north side of the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

This one-story adobe structure in Spanish-Pueblo Revival style has endured Spanish colonial rule, the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, Mexican independence, U.S. territorial status, and statehood, housing 58 Spanish governors, 16 Mexican ones, and numerous American officials before becoming the Museum of New Mexico in 1909.

Today it serves as the historic core of the adjacent New Mexico History Museum with interpretive galleries on archaeology, Southwest jewelry, santos art, a print shop, photo archives, and the famous portal where Native American artisans sell handmade crafts, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
