Park
Palo Pinto Mountains State Park covers 4,871 acres of scenic, undeveloped former ranchland in Palo Pinto County, Texas, about 75 miles west of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and 75 miles east of Abilene, at 100 Park Road 77 near Strawn.
Opened as Texas's newest state park on March 1, 2026—the first in North Texas in 25 years—it features diverse Cross Timbers topography with 1,400-foot cuestas (slopes), canyons carved by Palo Pinto Creek and Russell Creek, Tucker Lake (68-90 acres), oak-mesquite woodlands, pocket prairies, and habitats for golden-cheeked warblers.
Visitors enjoy 16+ miles of multi-use trails (1.25 miles ADA-compliant) for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, fishing, non-motorized boating, swimming, camping (RV, tent, primitive), stargazing, and loaned gear like all-terrain wheelchairs, with light development preserving its remote oasis feel.
