Named after a militia soldier's lost pistol during the 1856 Rogue River Indian Wars, it features vast shifting sand dunes, pothole ponds attracting waterfowl and shorebirds, rock formations, and a wide beach ideal for windsurfing—host to national championships—hiking, kite flying, steelhead fishing, clamming, and birdwatching.
