Park
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, often called “the Porkies,” is Michigan’s largest state park, covering about 60,000 acres of rugged wilderness in the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior’s shoreline.
The park protects a vast old‑growth forest of hemlock and hardwoods, deep river valleys, roaring waterfalls such as those along the Presque Isle River, and scenic inland lakes like the famous Lake of the Clouds. Visitors can hike, backpack, and cross‑country ski on nearly 90 miles of trails, stay in modern campgrounds or rustic backcountry cabins, fish and boat on rivers and the big lake, and enjoy overlooks and the Summit Peak observation tower, all within a wild, relatively remote‑feeling setting that also offers interpretive programs and a visitor center near the park’s main entrance.
