Historical Landmark
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire, within Fort Constitution, is New Hampshire's oldest lighthouse, first established in 1771 as a shingled wooden tower with oil lamps—the 10th built before the American Revolution and the first north of Boston—marking the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor.
Rebuilt in 1804 as an 80-foot octagonal wooden structure and shortened to 55 feet, the current 48-foot cast-iron brick-lined tower dates to 1878, fitted with a 4th-order Fresnel lens in 1854 and now showing a fixed green light visible 12 nautical miles, automated in 1960 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
Maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard with preservation by the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses since 2001, it offers seasonal open houses, tours of the tower, 1903 oil house, and 1872 keeper's quarters amid its Revolutionary War fort setting overlooking the Piscataqua River.
