Park
Possum Kingdom State Park spans 1,530 acres in the rugged Palo Pinto Mountains and Brazos River Valley of Palo Pinto County, Texas, about 17 miles north of Caddo via Park Road 33, bordering the scenic 20,000-acre Possum Kingdom Lake with over 300 miles of shoreline and clear blue waters.
Acquired from the Brazos River Authority in 1940 and opened to the public in 1950, it features Civilian Conservation Corps-built rock structures from the early 1940s like culverts, a caretaker's cabin, and concession stand amid gently sloping beaches, steep cliffs, and white-tailed deer habitats.
Visitors enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, nature study, camping in RV/tent sites, picnicking, and watercraft rentals nearby, especially popular from March to July despite few actual possums.
