State Park
Pricketts Fort State Park in West Virginia features a reconstructed 18th-century log fort built in 1774 by the Prickett family on a small rise overlooking the confluence of Prickett’s Creek and the Monongahela River.
Unlike a military fort, it served as a civilian refuge for early settlers in the area against Native American attacks. When threats arose, up to 80 families from surrounding areas would gather inside the fort, enduring cramped conditions for days or weeks.
The park includes the recreated fort with 12-foot-high log walls and blockhouses at each corner, tiny cabins along the walls, a meetinghouse, and a storehouse. Living history interpreters demonstrate colonial crafts and daily life, allowing visitors to experience the hardships and community spirit of frontier life.
Nearby is the historic Job Prickett House built in 1859, providing additional insight into settlement life beyond the frontier era. The park remains open seasonally and offers a mix of historical education, outdoor activities, and scenic views.
