Performing Arts Theatre
The Providence Performing Arts Center, originally opened as Loew’s State Theatre in 1928, is a historic and grand movie palace located on Weybosset Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island.
Designed by the renowned architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, the theater is celebrated for its Art Deco style, gilded proscenium, opulent chandeliers, and detailed moldings. It initially hosted silent films, vaudeville acts, and Hollywood blockbusters, drawing thousands of attendees for its luxurious atmosphere. However, with the rise of television and damage from hurricanes in 1938 and 1954, the theater’s popularity declined, and it transitioned through various uses, including rock concerts in the 1970s.
Facing demolition in the late 1970s, local leaders mobilized to save the theater, leading to its reopening as the nonprofit Ocean State Theatre in 1978 and later renamed the Providence Performing Arts Center in 1982. Extensive renovations since 1999 have restored its original splendor and expanded the stage to accommodate large touring Broadway shows and orchestras.
Today, the PPAC is recognized as a vital cultural institution, hosting Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, and educational programs, playing a crucial role in Providence’s arts district and cultural revival.
