History Museum
Queen Emma Summer Palace, also known as Hānaiakamalama, is a historic house museum located in Nu‘uanu Valley near Honolulu, Hawaii.
Built in 1848, it served as the summer retreat for Queen Emma, wife of King Kamehameha IV, and their son from 1857 to 1885. The palace reflects classic Hawaiian and Victorian architectural styles and was a cool refuge away from the heat of Honolulu. It houses a collection of Queen Emma's personal belongings, antiques, furnishings, and royal regalia.
The home was almost demolished in 1915 but was saved by the Daughters of Hawai‘i, who have preserved and maintained it as a museum dedicated to Hawaiian history and culture. The palace is listed on both State and National Historic Registries and offers visitors a glimpse into the royal family’s life, along with insights into Hawaii’s monarchy and its heritage.
