These houses were once waterfront properties along the Cooper River before land was filled in. After the Civil War, the area fell into disrepair and was almost a slum until preservation efforts began in the early 20th century. In the 1930s, Dorothy Porcher Legge started restoring and painting several of the houses in pastel colors inspired by Colonial Caribbean styles, leading other owners to follow with their own bright hues.
This colorful transformation, which also helped keep the homes cool and was possibly meant to aid sailors returning to port, earned the row its iconic name. Today, Rainbow Row is one of Charleston’s most photographed and beloved landmarks, celebrated for its charming architecture and vibrant appearance, though the homes remain private residences.
