Red Clay State Historic Park

Red Clay State Historic Park, Tennessee, United States

Park

Red Clay State Historic Park spans 263 acres in southern Bradley County, Tennessee, just north of the Georgia state line near Cleveland, preserving the final capital grounds of the Cherokee Nation from 1832 to 1838 before the Trail of Tears forced removal.

Here, eleven councils convened amid heartbreak as Cherokees learned of the 1835 Treaty of New Echota ceding their lands, with replicas of a council house, farmstead, barn, corn crib, and sleeping huts depicting 19th-century life. Visitors explore the James F. Corn Interpretive Center with exhibits and Trail of Tears video, short hiking trails to Blue Hole Spring and the Eternal Flame memorial, picnic areas, amphitheater, and ranger programs in this Ridge and Valley Appalachian setting.
