Library
The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, Rhode Island, founded in 1747, is America’s first purpose-built library and the oldest continuously operating one in its original location.
Designed by Peter Harrison, it is housed in the earliest public Neoclassical building in the U.S., reflecting Georgian-Palladian architectural style inspired by Italian Renaissance principles. The library was established by Abraham Redwood and 45 other colonists to make knowledge widely accessible to the community, and it also includes Rhode Island’s first art gallery, added in 1875.
Over nearly three centuries, the institution has served as Newport’s intellectual and cultural center, combining a library, museum, and research facility while embracing a broad range of literary, visual, and historical collections. The Redwood Library remains a National Historic Landmark, symbolizing a continuous link to the colonial period and America's cultural heritage.
