Historical Place Museum
Rowan Oak in Oxford, Mississippi, was the home of author William Faulkner from 1930 until his death in 1962.
Originally built in 1844, it is a Greek Revival style house that Faulkner purchased when it was in disrepair and made several renovations and additions over the years. The property, which includes 33 acres of wooded land known as Bailey Woods, was Faulkner's private sanctuary and inspired much of his literary work, including his fictional Yoknapatawpha County.
The house retains about 90 percent of its original furnishings and personal items, such as Faulkner's typewriter and riding boots, preserved as they were during his lifetime. Now owned by the University of Mississippi, Rowan Oak is open to the public as a museum, honoring Faulkner's legacy and allowing visitors to experience the environment where he wrote many of his celebrated novels.
