Park
Rye Patch State Recreation Area is a 2,400‑acre park in northern Nevada along the Humboldt River, about 22 miles northeast of Lovelock, centered on the 11,000‑acre Rye Patch Reservoir and its smaller Pitt‑Taylor Reservoirs.
The area sits in a remote Great Basin desert landscape of sagebrush and rolling hills, with 72 miles of shoreline and a 22‑mile‑long reservoir built by a 75‑foot earthen dam completed in 1936 as part of a New Deal irrigation and flood‑control project before becoming a state recreation area in 1971.
Visitors enjoy primitive and developed camping, fishing for species such as white bass, catfish, black bass, walleye, crappie, and wipers, boating, water‑skiing, swimming, and wildlife viewing that includes raptors, deer, and other desert animals, plus short hiking trails and a popular metal‑detecting event called the Rye Patch Nugget Shoot, with the park open year‑round and managed by the Nevada Division of State Parks.
