Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area is a historic mining park in Sumpter, Baker County, Oregon, USA, centered on a massive gold dredge built in 1935 that operated nearly nonstop until 1954, extracting over $4 million in gold from Powder River sediments using 72 one-ton buckets on a floating hull amid the Elkhorn Mountains.
The last of three dredges in the valley, it left miles of rocky tailings visible today, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and opened to visitors in 1994 after Oregon State Parks acquired and restored it, offering self-guided deck exploration or weekend ranger tours from May to October.
Surrounded by wetlands with 1.5 miles of trails and viewing platforms showcasing nature's reclamation, it's a free day-use site linking to Oregon's gold rush past, with no camping but nearby lodging in the old mining town.
