Sweet Run State Park is Virginia's newest state park, spanning 884 acres in northern Loudoun County near Hillsboro, just four miles south of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, nestled between Short Hill Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains in a valley called "Between the Hills."
Dedicated in October 2023 as the first state park in Loudoun County, it features 11 miles of hiking trails and nine miles of equestrian trails through mature forests, meadows, mountain slopes, and along Sweet Run and Piney Run streams, with access to the Appalachian Trail, a nature play area for kids, picnic pavilion, and wildlife like endangered wood turtles, bald eagles, black bears, and herons.
Still under development with limited parking and no open facilities beyond trails as of early 2025, it preserves 19th-century farming ruins and a restored 1840s farmhouse, open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk for passive recreation like hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and horseback riding.
